Summary The purpose of this issue paper is to compare and contrast two different articles one written by L. Berk in 2010 that explores lifespan development. The other article was written by the staff and research team at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford in 2012 that addresses what cognitive development is and the progress of adolescence cognitive development. Childhood play behavior is an important part of every child’s life. Starting in infancy, children begin to explore their world through play. Children’s cognitive development has been viewed by different theorists, and they have found how they can help parents in their child’s development. Piaget theory of Cognitive Development For this paper I will be exploring Piaget’s theory of cognitive development. However, it is arguably a more challenging time for gifted students. Throughout the stages the child understands that objects continue to exist even when they cannot be seen which is referred to as object permanence. Four young girls that I babysit for, Mackenzie, Maggie, Meredith and Morgan, are sisters of varying ages and developmental levels. Mackenzie is eight years old, Maggie is six years old, Meredith is three years old and Morgan is sixteen months old.

Each girl is at a different stage in cognitive, physical, mental, social and emotional development. I will also discuss the merits and critiques of the theory in the field of cognitive development. I will also discuss the applicability of Gardner’s theory to my personal development. The final section will cover the application of the theory in a counselling framework. It was also found that a decline in cognitive function was present with low education, many social activities and minimum intellectual activities during childhood in leisure time and low adult social class.
