Medics: poor maternal health increases the risk of obesity in a child
Researchers at the University of Tennessee said that women with diabetes are at risk of “rewarding” the future baby with obesity.
In this case, it is not a question of diabetes in its classical sense, the risk of the disease increases gestational diabetes, which is characteristic of many pregnant women, therefore it is very important to monitor the level of sugar in the blood throughout the entire period of carrying a child.
More than 40,000 pregnant women who gave birth to babies from 1995 to 2004 in Northern California took part in the research.
During the first years of life and 7 years, academics oversaw the development of children.
As a result, the results were not comforting: in all pregnant women with high blood sugar levels, the children further suffered from extreme degrees of obesity.
Moreover, with standard diabetes, the risk increases by 98%, and with gestational – by 52%.
