Russia plans to create children with edited genes
It became known that Russian experts are ready to change the genes of the embryo before it is placed on the mother.
Scientists want to help HIV-positive mothers have children without a virus. To do this, you must neutralize the CCR5 gene in the embryo, and then plant it on a woman. Thus, it is likely that the baby will be born healthy.
However, specialists need to obtain permission for such manipulations from three organizations, including the Ministry of Health.
In scientific circles, the reaction is ambiguous: some colleagues believe that this operation is a significant breakthrough, someone says that the technology may not yet be ready. In addition, many are concerned about ethics.
If permits are received, the first edited embryos will be inserted by the end of the year.
